Małgorzata Pawlak’s painting bears the marks of metalanguage. The artist’s main focus is to follow the form, represent the essence of an image, but the ideas, reasons for her creation are equally important. The fundamental semantic dichotomy of her works refers to the antonyms creation-destruction, but also one-many and representation-abstraction. She is interested in the prevalence of photographic expressions of similar motifs pauperized by their inconceivable number on the internet. Through painting, she attempts to lend them a unique, individual sense, re-establishing the Benjaminesque aura of the work of art as a particular, organized universe. Pawlak uses her own techniques, or rather self-processed painting procedures, which give a special meaning to the processuality inscribed in the ritual of creating her pictures. The processes are at the same time the tool and theme of works characterized by subtlety and fragility resulting from the way they are created. The layering of successive coats of acrylic paint crowns the effect, which is the final work preserving the memory and traces of many damaged pictures. Perhaps that is why their magnetic visual charm is so powerful.
