Anna Kołacka’s painting is a combination of deliberate, planned action resulting in pictures which give an impression of spontaneous, organic expression. The author builds mock-up models, on the basis of which she creates abstract images. As she says, she carries out “experiments with the matter”: she observes transformations taking place in her models and is inspired by fragments of their surfaces, shapes, colours… What is interesting is the relationship between the models/objects and painting: sometimes it is a direct similarity (three-dimensional versions of the pictures, as it were), and sometimes quite remote, but still perceptible kinship. Also, a relationship in time: was the picture painted on the basis of the mock-up, or is it a “spinoff”, continuation of the process of painting which “got spatial” (parallel action?), or perhaps it was the picture that became a model for painting installations? The ephemeral nature of the models, their changeable state, are factored into the painting process. They are present in the viewer’s awareness, even though many of them no longer exist, having been disintegrated or discarded by the artists after serving their purpose. The careful reconstruction of exuberance is for me the most interesting aspect of her painting.
